Emergency Elevator Phones
It’s the Law
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA 4.10.14) and ASME A17.1, A17.1a, A17.3 and IBC all require a two-way voice emergency communication system in most elevators. In addition these systems must be answered 24-hours a day at a location capable of dispatching help.
The reality is that proper installation is required to produce a truly code-compliant elevator phone system. Practices such as installing more than one emergency phone on a single line, or programming them to call a number that is not answered 24-hours a day are examples of non-compliant systems. Using multiple vendors to comply can mean costly and poorly integrated technology.
