In response to recent tragedies involving people trapped in stairwells while evacuating during fire emergencies, municipalities are adopting new ordinances requiring emergency communication systems. People who are unable to reach a first floor stairwell exit or an area of refuge can utilize these emergency telephone systems to summon help.

As is the general practice for security reasons, stairwell doors above the first floor are locked from the stairwell side to prevent unauthorized persons from traveling floor to floor undetected, as well as preventing their access to non-public spaces. These locked doors can create traps, especially during a fire evacuation. In order to avoid these traps, some building operators have resorted to unlocking all of the stairwell access doors at the expense of tenant security.

Since unlocking all doors is an unacceptable security compromise, we have developed solutions to avert the tragic traps, and still retain the security of locked stairwell doors. Our stairwell emergency phones connect a trapped party in the stairwell with your guard station so that a guard can be dispatched to release them.

Our phones can be combined with our door release mechanism for magnetic locks or door strikes to allow the doors to be remotely released. This will provide you with an effective method to prevent avoidable tragedy by allowing evacuees a means of escape.
